Description
Eystrahorn is a little-known but epic mountain in east Iceland and it is part of the Krossasnesfjall mountain range. It is located approximately halfway between the settlements of Höfn and Djúpivogur on the Hvalnes Peninsula in East Iceland. Although there is no carpark at Eystrahorn, you can find parking at the nearby Hvalnes Lighthouse at its base.
Eystrahorn isn't as famous as its nearby Vestrahorn mountain but it looks spectacular as well. The mountain itself is composed of gabbro, a dark, jagged lava rock that is rich in magnesium and iron. In front of the mountain there is a black sand beach surrounded by a rocky coastline.
During our visit there the weather was pretty good. A sunny day with a few clouds in the sky making it perfect for hiking. We had a good couple of hours in this location enjoying the ocean cold wind and the amazing view of this epic coastline. Definitely you should stop here if you are travelling around Iceland!
In this photo you can also see Hvalnes Nature Reserve Beach, a black sand beach with many rocks at its side.
