The Trevi Fountain (Fontana di Trevi in Italian) is a fountain in the Trevi district in Rome, Italy. During my visit in Rome it was one of my favorite sightseeing experiences. I walked by the fountain several times both during the day and night. It was always crowded since it is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Italy. I think it looked really beautiful illuminated at night. And of course I threw a coin using my right hand over my left shoulder in the fountain to make a wish! You know, to return one day to Rome.
Here is some historical information. The Trevi Fountain was initially designed by Bernini for Pope Clemens XII. 50 years later it was redesigned by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini. Work on the fountain began in 1732 and it was completed in 1762. It is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world. Its name derives from the Latin word Trivium (intersection of three streets). The fountain is located right in the center of De 'Crocicchi Street, Poli Street and Delle Muratte Street.
At its centre is Pietro Bracci’s statue of Oceanus (Neptune), who stands atop a chariot pulled by sea horses and is accompanied by tritons. The fountain also features statues of Abundance and Health. In the façade, articulated like a triumphal arch, there are two reliefs that allude to the legend of the source and the history of the aqueduct: on the right, the virgin indicating the source to the Roman soldiers and, on the left, Agrippa who orders the start construction of the aqueduct.
This iconic architectural monument was featured in famous films like La Dolce Vita by director Federico Fellini and Dan Brown’s book Angels and Demons starring Tom Hanks.
