Description
At the rooftop of Notre Dame Cathedral of Paris in France you will find many grotesque stone statues of gargoyles overlooking the city. Some gargoyles were depicted as monks, or combinations of real animals and people. They provide the cathedral church with symbolic protection since they are mythical creatures. Also some other gargoyles protect the building from temperamental weather, by preventing water from dripping too close to the walls.
In this photo you see a Chimera which overlooks Paris from atop Notre-Dame de Paris. The Chimera according to Greek mythology, was a monstrous fire-breathing hybrid creature of Lycia in Asia Minor, composed of the parts of more than one animal. It is located on the west façade of Notre-Date.
Notre-Dame is a world famous, medieval Catholic cathedral on the Île de la Cité in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. The cathedral was consecrated to the Virgin Mary and considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. Before the 2019 fire, which destroyed the spire and the "forest" of oak roof beams supporting the lead roof, you could climb the stairs to the top of the temple and get a close look to those famous statues. The view from the rooftop is simply beautiful. You can see the Eiffel tower and Seine river. You might also see cruise ships in the river.
