Description
Gljufrabui or Gljúfrafoss waterfall is a hidden gem located at Hamragarðar in South Iceland. Its name means "one who lives in the canyon" and that’s exactly what it is. A beautiful waterfall located inside a gorge. As you can see in the photo only the top part of the waterfall is visible from the outside. The water is falling down from the green hills of Eyjafjöll mountains and into a gorge. Most of it is obscured by the cliff rock. However you can follow a narrow path and enter the canyon where the waterfall creates a small pool. Of course be prepared to get really wet, and by wet I mean soaked, getting in there!
Gljufrabui is located very close to the famous Seljalandsfoss waterfall, about a ten minutes walk, but since it is less known it is far less crowded. You can either get there by walking about a kilometer from Seljalandsfoss or drive there with your car. You can even see Gljúfrabúi from the Ring Road 1 on the South Coast. It is located 128 kilometers (79,5 mi) away from Reykjavík and 60 kilometers (37,2 mi) away from the town of Vík. If you are interested there is a campsite just below Gljufrabui waterfall!
We visited this waterfall in September when the autumn colors created a beautiful scene. The trees had wonderful yellow and orange tones and the grass started getting yellow. Overall it was a great stop by to enjoy this epic vista. Although the waterfall is about 40 meters tall it looks relatively small down below the huge rocky mountain.
