Description
Godafoss is a stunning waterfall in the Mvatn District of Northern Iceland. In modern Icelandic its name translates as “Waterfall of the Gods”! However, a Viking leader named orgeir Ljósvetningagoi is mentioned in an old Icelandic folklore as the source of the waterfall's name. It is, nonetheless, widely accessible to tourists due to its location on the Ring Road, approximately 45 minutes east of Akureyri, Iceland's second largest city. This natural beauty is created by the water of the river Skjálfandafljót, which falls from a height of 12 meters across a width of 30 meters.
You can enjoy Godafoss from both its sides so you may easily spend an hour there. The waterfall can be seen from two vantage points, but you can also walk down to the river's edge. Cutting rocks, on the other hand, can be quite slippery, so be cautious. Aside from that, the walkaways and lookouts are excellent for enjoying your visit.
This black and white, long exposure photograph was taken from the riverbank on the east side of this lovely waterfall. We went to see the sunrise and sunset at this place. And we were extremely fortunate to have such beautiful weather!
You can find some coloured photos of Godafoss waterfall in my Iceland gallery.
