Description
This is the building of the Hellenic Parliament, also known as Greek Parliament or Vouli ton Hellinon in Greek. It has served as a Royal Palace for King Otto and his queen Amalia and later by King George I and his family. It is overlooking Syntagma Square in Athens. The Parliament is the supreme democratic institution. It consists of a unicameral legislature of 300 members which represent the Greek citizens.
In front of the Parliament there is a war memorial called the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier or “Mnimio tou agnostou stratioti” in Greek. It is a cenotaph dedicated to the Greek soldiers killed during war. It was sculpted between 1930 and 1932 by sculptor Fokion Rok. The tomb is guarded by the Evzones of the Presidential Guard.
Many tourists visit this monument to photograph with one of the Evzones who are wearing the traditional uniform which includes the well known fustanella, a kilt-like garment. The distinguishable red shoes with the black pompoms are called tsarouchia. Those clothes evolved from the clothes worn by the klepths in Greek War of Independence. Evzones are required to stay totally still at all times. They are only allowed to make little changes every hour.
