Description
Kirkjufell is probably the most iconic mountain in Iceland. It is located on the north coast of Iceland's Snæfellsnes peninsula, not far from the town Grundarfjörður. Along with Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall they create an epic vista! Kirkjufell means Church Mountain because of its resemblance to a church. The river's name is Kirkjufellsá, and it originates from the Helgrindur volcano.
Hundreds of people visit Kirkjufellsfoss every day. It has become the most popular place for a photo stop here in Grundarfjörður. There is a nearby parking lot where you can leave your car and after a 5-10 minute walk you can get to Kirkjufellsfoss. You can easily see why. We visited this spot twice, and even before daybreak, there were scores of photographers waiting for the sun to rise with their tripods lined up (it never did). This black and white photo was taken by getting down to the cascade of the waterfall. In my gallery I have a few more photos in case you wanna have a look!
Nonetheless, the mountain in the background and the waterfall in the foreground combine to make a stunning photo that you must shoot if you visit Iceland!
Kirkjufell is undoubtedly a wonderful mountain, and if you are a nature lover, you will not want to miss the opportunity to visit it!
And if you are a Game of Thrones fan you might recognize Kirkjufell as the "Arrowhead mountain" in season 7 episode 6 when the heroes go to north of the wall. It also appears in the 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty'.
