Description
The most widely used radiotelephone spelling alphabet is the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, also known as the NATO phonetic alphabet, NATO spelling alphabet, ICAO phonetic alphabet, or ICAO spelling alphabet.
To develop the code, a group of international organizations assigned 26 code words acrophonically to the letters of the English alphabet in order to make the names for letters and numbers as distinct as possible so that they could be easily understood by those who exchanged voice messages by radio or telephone, regardless of language differences or connection quality.
NATO updated the then-current set of code words used by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in 1956, and the ICAO approved the changes the following year, making it the international standard. The words were chosen to be understandable in French and Spanish as well as English.
The 26 code words are as follows: Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliett, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu. Numbers are read off as English digits.
