Description
Erechtheion or Erechtheum is an ancient temple located on the North side of the Acropolis of Athens in Greece. It was dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon, two of the twelve Olympian gods. The sculptor and mason of the structure was Phidias, who was employed by Pericles to build both the Erechtheion and the Parthenon.
Here you can see the Porch of the Caryatids, also known as Porch of the Maidens. The Caryatids are six draped female figures which work as supporting columns. The statues you see in the photograph are replicas. One of the Caryatids was removed in 1800 by Lord Elgin in order to decorate his Scottish mansion. Later sold to the British Museum (along with the pedimental and frieze sculpture taken from the Parthenon). The other 5 statues are exhibited in the new Acropolis Museum in Athens. Hopefully some day the missing Caryatid, along with the Parthenon sculpture, will be returned to Greece.
Acropolis is a world famous monument which really worth visiting if you are in Athens. Tourists from all over the world visit this place to admire Parthenon. I still remember the awe I felt the first time I visited this amazing ancient citadel and saw Parthenon. The new Acropolis museum also worth paying a visit to see the original Caryatid statues and the Parthenon Marbles.
