Seljalandsfoss waterfall is located in the South Region in Iceland. It is probably one of the most beautiful and iconic waterfalls in Iceland because of the path that leads you just behind it! The waterfall drops 60 m (176 ft) and is part of the Seljalands River that has its origin in the volcano glacier Eyjafjallajökull. Seljalandsfoss is also known as Seljalands waterfall which means 'selling the land of waterfalls' in English.
Seljalandsfoss is very easy to reach by following Route 1 and the road that leads to Þórsmörk Road 249. It's at a distance of about 120 kilometres from the capital city of Reykjavík towards the South Coast. There is also a parking lot with a fee where you can leave your car and walk a few meters to the waterfall. That's why you will usually find many tourists at this breathtaking location. If you want to get at the back of the waterfall be prepared to get wet and also watch out since the path is usually pretty slippery!
Someone could say you can spend about half an hour at this waterfall in order to take some photos and follow the path behind the waterfall. We spend there for sure more than that since we took a lot of pictures and we waited for the sunset. Besides it is always fun seeing the sun while you are behind the waterfall!
In this photo you can see a colorful sky with clouds painted with yellow and orange tones and the warm sunset light hitting the waterfall. The cave and the rocks behind the waterfall are also beautifully illuminated with warm tones. The long exposure creates a peaceful and calm scene in contradiction to the sound of the water falling into the small pond from a height of 60 m.
To sum it up I would highly recommend visiting this spectacular natural wonder while you explore the South Coast of Iceland! It is so beautiful at any time of the year may it summer or winter!
