Artist's Description

The Greek alphabet has been used to write the Greek language since the late 9th or early 8th century BCE.It is the earliest known alphabetic script to have distinct letters for vowels as well as consonants. In Archaic and early Classical times, the Greek alphabet existed in many local variants, but by the end of the 4th century BCE, the Euclidean alphabet, with 24 letters, ordered from alpha to omega, had become standard and it is this version that is still used for Greek writing today. Many people consider it difficult to learn it, thus the expression “It’s all Greek to me”!

An interesting fact is that the word Alphabet comes from the two first letters of the Greek Alphabet: Alfa and Beta.

Nowadays many Greek symbols are used as symbols in mathematics, physics and other sciences.

In this photo you can see the uppercase and lowercase letters of the Greek Alphabet along with their names.

About Alexios Ntounas

Alexios Ntounas

Hey! I am Ntounas Alexios, born in Thessaloniki, Greece. I am a software engineer and in the past few years I became passionate about photography. I always enjoyed travelling and exploring new places. With my photos I can share those experiences with the rest of the world. Photography is a good reason to wake up early to capture a sunrise, to stay out late to photograph the milky way or to wait for the perfect light. In the end its all about being out in nature capturing the perfect moment. Landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes and astrophotography are my favorite genres of photography. My photographs have been published in Greek magazines and I have participated in various photography exhibitions.
