Description
Thessaloniki, also known as Thessalonica, Salonica or Saloniki, is the second-largest city in Greece. It is located on the Thermaic Gulf, at the northwest corner of the Aegean Sea.
It is also known in Greek as η Συμπρωτεύουσα (i Simprotévousa) meaning literally "the co-capital". Thessaloniki is also the capital of the geographic region of Macedonia and a big Greek port..
Evidence of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history remains, especially around Ano Poli, the upper town. This is where this photo was taken from. The upper town is a beloved place for the citizens of Thessaloniki since it offers a great panoramic view of the city, the Thermaic Gulf and if the weather is clear you can even see Mount Olympus, the tallest mountain in Greece. You can distinguish its buildings here thanks to their red roofs which contradict with the newest modern buildings which are closer to the sea.
That evening I went out for a walk at Ano Poli. I had my camera with me since the conditions looked ideal for a great sunset. This photo was taken at dusk, just after sunset. The sun set behind Olympus creating a beautiful silhouette of the mountain ridge. The sky had a few clouds and it was filled with wonderful red and orange tones after the sunset. The city lights started slowly to turn on making the whole city feel alive. Many people were sitting around enjoying the sunset on their own or talking with friends. Many big cargo ships were anchored throughout the gulf in order to spend their night here. Their lights were also turned on making them sparkle in the calm sea.
In between the buildings you can also distinguish the 4th-century AD Rotunda of Galerius, one of several Roman monuments in the city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just look for the road opening in between the houses leading to the sea. At the left you will find the top of the White Tower, a prominent Ottoman addition to the city walls, built in 1430 and rebuilt in 1535 and symbol of the city.
Watching the Nymph of Thermaic, another name of Thessaloniki, makes you understand why it is such a popular tourist destination and why in 2013, National Geographic Magazine included Thessaloniki in its top tourist destinations worldwide!
