Description
The Platamon Byzantine Castle is located in Pieria in the prefecture of Macedonia in northern Greece. It was built between 1204 and 1222 in a strategic position which controls the exit of the Tempe valley. The tower is an imposing medieval fortress. The walls are designed as a polygon with towers overlooking the area. A footpath leads from what today is the parking lot to the gate of the castle. In this photo you see the castle beautifully illuminated at dusk. The blue of the sky contradicts with the orange and yellow lights, while the trees frame the picture.
During our visit to the city of Platamon we couldn’t miss the opportunity and we visited the castle which is open to the public with a small fee. To be honest there aren’t many things to see inside but it’s always great to visit an old castle, climb to the walls and imagine people living there! The view over the Aegean Sea and Mount Olympus however is really beautiful. Definitely pay a visit if you happen to be in the area!
