Description
Athens (Athina in Greek) is the capital and largest city in Greece. It dominates the Attica region and is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning over 3,400 years. It is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy since it has been a centre for the arts, learning and philosophy. That’s why walking throughout the city you often come across many ancient buildings.
If you visit Athens you should of course climb to the Acropolis in order to visit Parthenon temple. The Acropolis hill also offers a great 360 view of the city. Here is a panoramic photo of the city. I will try to guide you through the most iconic and famous landmarks in this picture. Just try to follow me through the vast amount of apartment buildings!
Starting from the left you can see Lycabettus, one of the tallest hills of the city which of course also offers a great view! Next you can see the Greek Parliament which was the former Royal Palace! The hill is a tourist destination and can be ascended by the Lycabettus Funicular, a funicular railway which climbs the hill from a lower terminus at Kolonaki. At the top of the hill there is a large open-air amphitheatre which has housed many Greek and international concerts.
The National Garden of Athens (formerly named the Royal Garden) is an urban forest of 15.5 hectares. It was commissioned by Queen Amalia in 1838 and completed by 1840. Walking through it will lead you to the Zappeion Hall which is used for meetings and ceremonies, both official and private. The Zappeion was used during the 1896 Summer Olympics as the main fencing hall.
Now you should see a small part of Kallimarmaro (also known as The Panathenaic Stadium). It is one of the main historic attractions of Athens and the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble! This stadium held the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1896 Olympic, the first international Olympic Games held in modern history. In the 2004 Olympics it hosted the finish of the Marathon.
Finally at the right of the photo you see The Temple of Olympian Zeus, king of the Gods. It is also known as the Olympieion or Columns of the Olympian Zeus, is a former colossal temple at the center of the Greek capital Athens. It was constructed in the 6th century BC. The temple's glory was short-lived, as it fell into disuse after being pillaged during a barbarian invasion in 267 AD, just about a century after its completion. It was probably never repaired and was reduced to ruins thereafter.
So, that was a quick walk through some of the most iconic landmarks and famous monuments of the city of Athens, visited every year by thousands of tourists! I hope you enjoyed it!
